What is claim is:
1. A mail processing system comprising:
a mail-processing device for assigning postal charges to mail items, the mail-processing device having a first memory means for storing information related to the mail items, and being provided with an assigning means for assigning to mail items information identifying the mail-processing device;
a data capturing device for capturing the information assigned to the mail items, the data capturing device being provided with a second memory means for storing information relating to mail items, in correspondence with the identifying information previously assigned by the assigning means; and
a host computer for gathering information from the mail-processing device and the data capturing device, the host computer being provided with a compiling means for gathering information stored in the first memory means and in the second memory means.
