1st paragraph
To facilitate an understanding of the principles and features of the present invention, it is described hereinafter in the context of a specific embodiment. In particular, reference is made to an implementation of the invention in which a smart card can be connected to a personal computer. It will be appreciated, however, that the practical applications of the invention are not limited to this particular embodiment. Rather, the invention can be employed in a variety of different systems in which it is desirable to utilize the functionality of a smart card without the need for a reader that strictly conforms to published standards for smart cards.
